AIS 4070
For the AIS 4070 course, our final project was to work with our assigned team to develop the concept for a new nonprofit organization and present it via an infographic. I really enjoyed working on this project because it incorporated aspects of media communication, for which I built a skillset in during my time as a student of Electronic Media Technology. My role in the team focused on designing impactful compositions and visuals to boost the credibility of our ideas.
This course taught me a lot about start up and administrative processes for nonprofit organizations, the reasons why we need nonprofits, and strategies for problem solving issues issue that may occur within such organizations. The part that seemed most interesting to me was discussion of how best to manage personnel and ways to increase motivation in the workplace. I was really surprised to learn the value of a volunteer’s time, and I admire that many people chose to make such a contribution because of their dedication to helping organizations effect change and meet community needs that are left unaddressed by private sectors.
The biggest lesson I am taking away from this course is that starting and running a nonprofit organization is a huge feat but not an impossible one. It is a process that requires collaboration with others who share a similar vision. I think that much of my coursework in the BTAS program will center around how to communicate more effectively as a member of a team so that it can arrive at new limits for productivity and innovation. I am proud of the work that my teammates and I were able to produce and I’m left with an understanding that while communicating (virtually, and working remotely!) may be challenging at times, it is often worth the effort.
Here is the infographic my team developed for a fictional nonprofit that would serve its community by organizing shore clean-up projects:
